NRF Retail Security Survey 2016

The National Retail Federation (NRF) and Dr. Richard Hollinger of the University of Florida jointly conducted a survey to develop and analyze retail loss prevention benchmarks. The research is in its 25th year. The survey examines:

  • Inventory shrinkage
  • Staffing and budgeting for the loss prevention departments
  • Employee integrity screening
  • Loss prevention training and awareness programs
  • The impact of dishonest employees
  • The costs of external retail crime

Some key statistics in The 2016 National Retail Security Survey report include:

  • US inventory shrink rate is 1.38%
  • Inventory hrink cost the US retail industry $45.2 billion in 2015
  • 48.1% of retailers surveyed reported increases in overall inventory shrink
  • Employee theft/internal was responsible for almost 36% of total inventory shrink
